Since Holly Jr. is soon to be 16, I have a first-hand glimpse into the current teen fashion trend, and every time I do, I want to cringe. The reason is two fold — number one, what I see is the 1980s alive and well, and number two, I sound like my mother and step mother when I was in high school and the fashion trends of the 1970s had come back around.

But, listen, it’s completely different, because the 80s is one decade where as far as fashion is considered, should have been long forgotten. Do not mistake me, I love the 1980s. That was my childhood, how could I not? But as much as I still hold gummy bracelets, pound puppies, and the real MTV close to my heart, I just cannot get behind the idea of skin-tight jeans, neon hues, and shirts that tie in a knot on the side dominating the store shelves.

This is all partly because I have to purchase these clothes too. Yes, I do still peruse the Junior’s department despite my too-near-30-to-even-want-to-think-about-it age, simply because I’m caught between that and the Women’s department, or as it’s also known Misses. And I’m too afraid that I’ll be dressing like Pat Benatar before too long.

If you have somehow managed to not witness what I am talking about, check out a mall near you. Boys sporting the Flock of Seaguls cut, girls with the fringed (very near the feathered hair, only in the opposite direction), high tops, spandex (for the love of God), and lots and lots of concert tees. Just please make it stop.

Trust me, I was just as 1980s as the next gal, in fact, ridiculously so, right down to the two layers of slouch socks with coordinating colors only reserved on each leg, like pink, white, white pink, and double laces, but I let it die right along with my economy-sized bottle of Aqua Net. The decade was over. It was time to move on.

What I wonder is, how the years post the early 1990s are going to be repeated fashion wise, as it seems anything beyond 1994 has just been a cycle of trends from former decades? Just regurgitate whatever decade was being mirrored at that time?

If that happens to be the case, can we all please make a note to skip 2007-2009 the next time around? Thanks.
